The Nokia Lumia McLaren is one of the most legendary cancelled smartphones ever created. Developed jointly by Nokia and Microsoft Mobile as the intended successor to the iconic Lumia 1020, it was cancelled in July 2014 — just four months before its planned November launch — leaving only a handful of prototype units in existence.
Its defining innovation was "3D Touch" (codenamed MixView) — a Kinect-like gesture system that allowed users to interact with the phone without physically touching the screen. Hovering a finger over a Live Tile would cause it to "explode" into smaller sub-tiles, revealing more content. Sensors embedded throughout the device's body could detect hand position, mute the speakerphone when a hand hovered nearby, and prevent accidental orientation changes.
The McLaren was never commercially released. Prototype units were distributed to only a very small number of testers and insiders, making genuine examples extraordinarily rare collector's pieces.
